Hi everyone! My name is Rusty Coonfield and here is my BLOG. That's short for "weblog" to you. Kind of like an online journal which may or may not include subjects like: how to use a Macintosh computer, cool and useful websites, new technologies, photos of outdoor pursuits and my family and friends. Please add you comments and have fun! -Rusty

Big ol Rock in the Road

Southern road into Sequoia National Park closed due to large boulder
The road through Sequoia National Park north of Highway 198 is currently closed between the Foothills Visitor Center and the Giant Forest Museum due to a large boulder and debris blocking the entire roadway. The Foothills Visitor Center will remain open from 8:00 to 4:30 throughout the weekend.
National Park Service crews are working on it now, but due to the size of the boulder it is expected that they will have to use explosives to remove it. There is the potential for more slides as a result of the blasting and the use of heavy equipment. The road will be re-assessed later today, and an update will be issued as soon as information is available.
Highway 180 coming into Kings Canyon National Park is currently open, however the Generals Highway is still closed from Montecito-Sequoia Lodge to Wuksachi Lodge following the heavy snows earlier this month. Park road crews have been called out to open an emergency lane on the Generals Highway between the parks today. Visitors with reservations at the Wuksachi Lodge in Sequoia National Park are being asked to call 559-565-4070 to check on status of their reservation.
For updated road and weather conditions, visitors are advised to call 559-565-3341.
